Glossary — the entry for charge-off previously said the creditor “writes off the debt,” which several readers read as forgiveness. Rewritten to say explicitly that the debt survives the accounting entry.

Closing an old card — the original version said closed accounts remain on the report for “seven to ten years.” That conflated the derogatory purge period with the retention of accounts in good standing. Corrected to about ten years from closure for accounts in good standing.

Inquiries — we gave the rate-shopping window as 45 days without qualification. It depends on the model generation and can be as short as 14 days. Corrected, and the practical advice narrowed accordingly.

Disputing an error — the piece said the reinvestigation period “can be extended to 45 days.” The extension is 15 days added when the consumer supplies further information during the reinvestigation, which is not the same statement. Fixed.

Reading a credit report — the table described the payment history grid as reading left to right. The direction differs between agencies. Reworded.
